Like the present pilgrim flask, it is the only known example of its kind from the Islamic world. Another unique model, in glass, is a pilgrim bottle in the British Museum, London attributed to the Mamluk dynasty, Egypt or Syria, thirteenth century (inv. no.1869.1-20.3).
The excavations at Shahr-i Qumis by the British Institute of Persian Studies in 1967 were co-sponsored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, this flask was not discovered until 1971, and it was acquired from the British Institute as a result of the Met’s financial contributions to the Institute’s excavations at Tepe Nush-i Jan, another site in Iran.

Pilgrim flask on hollow foot into which are cut two rectangular slots, one at each end. The sides have two pairs of horns in relief which curl up to a pair of grotesque satyr masks, each with two curling horns which form the handles of the flask.
